Sedation Dentistry in Chillicothe, Ohio.  Oral conscious sedation relaxes you so you have to more fear.

Oral conscious sedation is a method that helps certain patients cope more comfortably with dental appointments.

The benefits of oral concious sedation

Oral conscious sedation is useful in certain situations, such as for patients who -

  • are anxious about dental appointments.
  • have difficulty being numbed with local anesthesia.
  • have a severe gag response.
  • suffer from very sensitive teeth.
  • want to have a lot of dental work done during a single, longer appointment.

Reviewing your medical history

To plan the best treatment for you, we first need to know about your current medical conditions and medications. We also want to know about any allergic reactions you have had to any medication.

A typical visit with oral concious sedation

Oral Concious SedationHere is how a typical appointment with oral conscious sedation usually goes. We may ask you not to eat or drink anything for 12 hours before your appointment. Then, about an hour before your appointment begins, you take an oral medication. Because the medication will make you groggy, you need a friend or relative to bring you to the office.

Once you are seated in the chair, we assess how deeply you are sedated and adjust your medication if necessary. For most procedures, it will also be necessary to numb your mouth, but the oral medication you have taken will make this comfortable.

Oral Concious SedationDuring the procedure, we constantly monitor your pulse, blood pressure, and oxygen levels to ensure your safety. You will not feel any pain or be aware of time passing during the procedure. You will feel very comfortable and relaxed and may even sleep. However, you will respond easily to touch and our requests.

After the procedure, your friend or relative will take you home, where you relax for the rest of the day. For many, oral conscious sedation is a good choice for anxiety-free dentistry.

How Does it Work?

With oral concious sedation, you are given a pill to take one hour prior to your dental appointment. Your companion will accompany you to the office. When you arrive, you will be very relaxed, and a little sedated. You will sink into a very comfortable chair, covered with a thick, warm, and cozy blanket. Your vital signs will be monitored carefully at all times. After you are comfortable, our experienced clinical team will take care of your dental needs. When your treatment is completed your companion will return you home to finish relaxing.

Commonly asked questions

Q. Will I feel any sort of pain at all?
A. No, you will feel nothing. Most patients feel no discomfort whatsoever during their treatment and feel surprisingly good afterwards with little or no memory of your treatment.

Q. Will I be completely unconscious?
A. No you will not, although you are in a state of sedation. You will receive just enough medication so that you will be completely relaxed during your treatment.

Q. Will I be monitored while I am sedated?
A. Yes, with very sophisticated vital sign monitoring equipment, and one of our team members is always with you throughout the entire visit.

Q. How long will I be sedated for my treatment?
A. Depending on your individual needs, you may be sedated for any amount of time from 2-6 hours.

Q. How will I travel to and from the doctor's office if I am to be sedated?
A. Although you will feel fine after your appointment, you will need to have someone to accompany you due to the sedative effects of the medication. This person should be available to bring you to and from the office. You should NOT drive after taking your prescribed medication until the time that will be outlined by your Dentist.

Q. How do I know if Sedation is right for me?
A. Before receiving treatment of any kind your medical history will be thoroughly reviewed by the Doctor. He or she will decide how well you will fit into a Sedation program. And, as mentioned before, you will be monitored very closely during your treatment.
